MAIO ISLAND Maio is located in the south of the Cape Verde archipelago and was discovered in 1460 and named after the month it was founded – Maio means May. The economic activity of Maio was limited for a long time to the breeding of goats but in the 17th Century the production of salt brought more people to the island. Nowadays the fact that Maio has the second largest airport in Cape Verde means a tremendous potential for tourism and property developers are starting to show great interest in the location Maio Island is fairly flat with Monte Penoso its highest point measuring 436 metres. The longest point in the North-South direction of 24km, and the widest in the East-West direction of 16km.
The climate of the island is dry and there are many beautiful white sand beaches with crystal clear waters. There is a project of reforestation being carried out on the island with acacia trees.

DO NOT WAIT AND BUY LAND, BUY LAND AND WAIT Places to visit. Maio Maio is about 2km from the airport and is right next to the sea. The small port here is where the fishing boats are moored and nearby is the fortress built in the 18th Century to defend the town from pirates. Overlooking the town is a magnificent church surrounding by stunning flower gardens and a cooperative building spectacular because it is built in the form of an African hut. Morro Morro is a small village built on the road side. Here you can sample some of the local handicrafts or relax or fish on the attractive beach with its clear waters. Just up the road from Morro you can visit the now abandoned salt pits. Baia de Santana This is a deserted white sand beach in the shape of a semi circle notable because this is where the sea turtles come frequently and lay their eggs.
